This instrument and its peculiarities were described in the «Popular test design tools». However in this article we will look through the process of signing in; creation of projects, test cases, test-plans, test-runs and so on.
This tool is paid, however there is a 14-day free trial period. This is quite enough to understand and get used to the system a little.
1. In order to start the working process, open the link and click «Try for Free».
2. Next, the account registration form opens and you can choose the version to be installed on the server or the cloud version. An online tool will be sufficient for familiarization and individual work.
After confirming the specified e-mail, the user is automatically transferred to the personal board, where almost all work takes place.
In order to start working in the system, you need to create a project. It is the main organizational unit of TestRail. It is usually recommended to create a new project for each real project. Test runs, test results, milestones and other data are directly related to each specific project.

2. Next, a form opens for filling in the name of the project (it is mandatory), its announcement and options for organizing test sets:
3. The last step is to click the «Add project» button.
Done, the project is created, the menu, diagram, list and buttons for creating events and test runs, actions with the project (adding and viewing events, test runs, test cases) are displayed.
1. First, you need to click «TEST CASES» on the menu.
2. If the project is new and test cases for it have not yet been added, then a page appears with rather limited functions: «Add Section» and «Add Test Case».

4. After filling the fields with data, click the «Add Test Case» button.
The test case has been created! The attached example preview page is displayed.
In TestRail test suites are called Section and Subsection.
1. In order to add a new section, click on the «Add Section» button.
2. A form appears for filling in the title of the section (required), description and adding media files (optional). Then click the «Add Section» button below the form.
That's it, a new section has been created. In order to create a subsection for this section, click on the «Add Subsection» button.
A form similar to the creation of a section appears, which is filled with the appropriate data, and the button for creating a section is clicked.
After creating a «Sign in» chapter and two subsections «Authorization» and «Registration», the following structure is displayed:
Previously, a test case was created for authorization with valid data, but it was added to the default section (which, by the way, can be deleted or edited). So, this example can easily be moved to the required section/subsection. To do this, you only need to point the mouse at the created test case, pinch it with the mouse and drag it to the required place.
Menu with Move here, Copy here or Cancel options appears.
The way the sections are organized depends on the size of the project. If there are many test cases, it is recommended to further partition the sections and create subsections for specific functions.
If you need to manage multiple test runs and configurations for a single project, TestRail test plans come in handy. A test plan allows you to run multiple test runs at the same time if you need to test multiple configurations. It can be anything you need to test projects, for example, different operating systems or browsers.
Creating a test plan, like many other things, is very simple. For this you need:
1. Go to the «TEST RUNS & RESULTS» tab, and click the «Add Test Plan» button.
2. The form appears for filling in the name of the test plan in the «Name» field (required), the stage in the «Milestone» field, and the «Description» field (both are not mandatory).
3. Click the «Add Test Plan» button.
The test plan has been created. A chart of activity and progress in working with it is displayed.

After filling in all the necessary fields, click the «Add Test Run» button. A page with a diagram and a list of test cases included in this test run is displayed. The test cases have not been completed yet, so they have the «Untested» status and the test run itself has been completed by 0%.
2. In order to mark the passing of a test case, you need to click on the «Untested» drop-down list, which is located to the right of the name of the test case.
Each of them has five statuses:
3. After selecting one of the options (in this case Passed), a small form appears with the result of the check, which has the following fields:
The result of passing the test cases of the current test run will be a similar diagram with the percentages of each of the statuses. You can view the test results and test activity of runs, stages and entire projects on individual resource pages. Statistics of the current test run can be downloaded as an image or CSV file.
After the defect is corrected, you can use the rerun function to run the test again and display new results.
To make important project decisions, it is extremely important to have access to detailed information about the progress and results of testing. Questions like «What percentage of the test run was completed successfully?» or «What tests have been performed in the last 24 hours?» can only be answered effectively with TestRail.
The system discussed in this article allows you to create and pass tests in an optimized and very convenient interface.
