How to find game version in steam and more

Game version and build are very important parameters for gamers and testers. There are several options to find the version of the game including the one installed from Steam.

Ways to identify the game build:

Method 1: Game folder

In order to see the required parameter in а clearer and more convenient way, stick to the following instructions: 

1. Go to Steam to the «Library» section, find the necessary game in the list, right-click on it and select the «Properties» item;

2. Choose «Local Files» and click the «Browse…» button.

Note: Without running the client this folder can be found through Windows Explorer. Usually, the path to the folder is X:\Steam\steamapps\common\GAME_NAME, where X is the name of the disk and GAME_NAME is the folder with the game. By default, it is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common.

3. Find the EXE file that starts the game in the folder and hover the mouse over it. In the information window, you will see the game version.

Note: This data can be obtained by right-clicking the EXE file and choosing «Properties». Go to the «Details» tab – you will find the data you need in the «File Version» and «Product Version» rows. The product version is the build number. 

Method 2: Game menu

In some games, the version is displayed the time the game starts. The disadvantage of the method is that it does not apply to all games and not all developers add this data to the main screen.

Usually, it is enough to start the game and carefully look at the screen to find the version.

Depending on the format, the main menu can have «About»/«Credits»  or other items that indicate the informational section. There you can often find facts about the publisher, project development team as well as game version. If you cannot find this menu item, it might be hidden and, for example, be the subsection of the settings. 

Method 3: Console command

If there is the possibility to open the console in the game, then it is possible to get the main information about this game with the help of one of the commands. For example, in Counter-Strike you need to enter the version command, and the build number will be shown in the «Exe build» row. All text or its part can be copied. But the command can be different in other games with the console, so you need to find information about it through the command list supported for entering.
